We work hard to make sure our employees know and understand the laws and follow them closely, and that means we give them training updates every year. But in our business, it’s very important to keep up with everything, especially when you have a fleet of trucks. Q: How do you manage to keep up with California’s regulatory programs?Ī: It is a challenge, to say the least. And we will pay for training at off-site schools if it’s for skills relevant to warehouse operations or sales. And when they want to play a bigger part, we set up in-house and on-the-clock training sessions. That helps them get involved, which is good because we don’t have all the answers. Q: What is the advancement process like for workers?Ī: We regularly circulate engagement surveys so we can get the employees’ feedback. We’re not perfect, but we want to be better than we were a year ago. Our mission is to grow our business and grow our people at the same time. And we work hard but do it the right way. Everybody has a name and nobody is a number. Q: What is it in your corporate culture that makes it successful?Ī: We’re a big firm but we operate like we’re local. A lot of people on the market have heard that we take care of people.Īnd, while the beer business is hard work, we do what we can to have a lot of fun. We do market research on what other companies offer, and we pay our people very well. We have medical, dental, vision and 401(k) benefits. Since (Reyes Brothers) bought Gate City, they’ve been investing in it, so workers know that this is a place that pays well and has a state-of-the-art facility.įor merchandisers, the beginners’ position, we start at $15 an hour, and $16.50 for selectors. How do you compete for employees - and keep them?Ī: It starts from the top, with the employers. Q: You work in a job sector that is one of the Inland Empire’s biggest, in a tight labor market. We talked with Buenrostro about maintaining that momentum going while keeping the workers involved. “It’s a great problem to have when your number one brew is up 15% on the year,” Buenrostro said. The largest of the 50-odd brands they distribute is the Mexican brew Modelo, which has been growing in popularity. The trucks have beer brands painted on them, but they’re all owned by Gate City. The drivers are Gate City employees, and many earn as much as $80,000 per year, depending on the miles they drive. They deliver more than 20 million cases of beer to some 4,000 retail locations. “I’m just one of many entry-level employees around here who worked his way up,” Buenrostro said.Īlong with the warehouse floor, Gate City also owns and operates 80 large delivery trucks that cover the entire Inland Empire, some 7,700 square miles. ![]()
